Although many of these links no longer work, I believe that it is
important to be able to find that these stories have existed for
ferreting out existing or impending environmental problems. The
repercussions of pollution or overuse of a resource often takes a long
time for us to recognize and when we finally do, it is invaluable to be
able to track the history of various issues before they get to a tipping
point and became a crisis.
Also, much that mankind has done to change our environment was
accomplished without any knowledge of what the environment was like
before changing it, but maybe we will be able to heal our environmental
if we archive the news stories so we will be able to unravel the events
that led up to the disaster. Students, scientists, historians, and
citizens alike should benefit from being able to follow the thread of an
issue back through time.

RIT adviser has a passion for sustainability | Democrat and
Chronicle | democratandchronicle.com As a little girl, Enid
Cardinal watched her father climb the trees in her backyard and
shake branches until the apples fell. Then the family would pile
into their station wagon — along with the apples and empty milk jugs
— to head to a processing plant, which pressed the apples into cider
that lasted through the winter. She picked strawberries from her
best friend's farm, tapped trees for maple syrup and ate meals made
from scratch. So Cardinal feels right at home as senior
sustainability adviser to Rochester Institute of
Technology President Bill Destler.

Learn all you can about hydrofracking | Democrat and Chronicle |
democratandchronicle.com President Barack Obama made campaign
promises about the creation of a green energy economy that would
generate jobs and a supply of sustainable energy. But sadly, these
promises have yet to come to fruition. One example is the failed
solar energy company Solyndra. Two years after it received a
half-billion dollars in federal stimulus loans, the California-based
company is now bankrupt and under federal investigation. The most
recent federal jobs report stated that the national unemployment
rate held at 9.1 percent, and no new jobs in the private sector were
added in August. (September 23, 2011)

A G Eric Schneiderman OpEd: Let's Get The Facts To Save The
Environment As Attorney General, one of my top priorities is
protecting New York's natural resources. We must be vigilant and
proactive in protecting the state's environment and health, but we
must do so in a way that is informed and thoughtful. On many issues
that come before this office and others in government, there are
stakeholders on every side demanding that the state take one
position or another, before solid information to make an informed
decision is available. As a legal office, we take a different
approach. The guiding philosophy behind our process is what I call
"evidence-based decision making." This measured approach entails
gathering the facts about the potential risks to New Yorkers'
health, environment and public safety before deciding to act on a
given matter. (April 28, 2011)HOME -

Sierra speakers stress sustainable production - News Blog -
Rochester City Newspaper What's good for the environment is also
good for the corporate bottom line. That was essentially the message
that Catherine Reeves, Xerox's director of sustainable operations,
delivered last night during the Rochester Sierra Club's annual
environmental forum. This year, the forum focused on sustainable
production. Reeves and Nabil Nasr, director of RIT's Center for
Integrated Manufacturing Studies and its Golisano Sustainability
Institute, were the event's speakers. As a concept, sustainable
production can get complex and wonky. But the basic idea is to
produce products in a way that doesn't harm the environment, that
benefits consumers and society, that minimizes resource consumption,
and that makes money for the company. The ideal is a closed loop
system, where waste and obsolete products are reused or properly
disposed of by the company, Nasr said. (April 22, 2011)

NY Group Joins Call on Feds to Study Gas Drilling Impact
NEW YORK - A group of eight organizations is calling for a
comprehensive study of potential risks to water safety and the
environment from drilling for natural gas, in New York and five

formation will generate much-needed energy, jobs, and billions in
state revenues, but it needs to be done safely. Pat Carrulo, a

it involves fracturing subsurface rocks to free gas trapped in the

Grassroots grows with Waterweek Can you
describe what Waterweek is? Waterweek is basically an event for
Recyclemania, which is going on from Feb. 6 through April 2 and is
one of the big three events that we have. We thought that raising
awareness of reducing bottled water would be good for this event.
What we’re going to do is a water taste testing to show the
difference between the bottled water and plain tap water. We have
tap water that is filtered and bottled water, and we ask what the
person prefers and then ask him to guess which one’s which. (March

ENVIRONMENT: RIT helps track ecological changes -
News Articles - Rochester City Newspaper An early low-tech
method for determining air safety in coal mines was to bring a
canary into the mine shaft. If carbon monoxide or methane gas
reached perilously high levels or oxygen was dangerously low, the
canary would die. That signaled miners to immediately vacate the
mine. The National Ecological Observatory Network could be described
as the country's high-technology equivalent to the canary. NEON is a
network of scientists throughout the US committed to a massive
30-year study of the possible long-term impacts of environmental
changes on people. And the Rochester Institute of Technology is one

President Obama Announces Plan for Community-Based Conservation
through the America’s Great Outdoors Initiative
WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Barack Obama today announced the
Administration’s action plan, under the America’s Great Outdoors
initiative, to achieve lasting conservation of the outdoor spaces
that power our nation’s economy, shape our culture, and build our
outdoor traditions. By making the Federal Government a better
partner with American communities, this initiative seeks to
reinvigorate our approach to conservation and reconnect Americans,
especially young people, with the lands and waters that are used for
farming and ranching, hunting and fishing, and for families to spend
quality time together. Recognizing that many of these places and
resources are disappearing and under intense pressure, the President
established the America’s Great Outdoors Initiative last April to
work with the American people in developing a conservation and
recreation agenda that makes sense for the 21st century.

NYSERDA-sponsored school program uses Adirondack loons to teach
about pollution ALBANY - The Adirondack loon – and the threat
that pollution poses to this iconic symbol of northern lakes– is the
subject of a new classroom program co-sponsored by the New York
State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). “The
Ecological Impact of Pollution – Conservation Through the Lives of
Adirondack Loons” is a new, Web-based classroom curriculum designed
for high-school science classes and available free to teachers
around New York. The program is part of the innovative Science on
the Fly! curriculum that uses loon mercury research in New York’s
Adirondack Park to teach students how pollution can damage the
environment. The research comes from the BioDiversity Research
Institute’s (BRI) Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation, a
not-for-profit based in Gorham, Maine that produced the curriculum
with support from NYSERDA, the Dorr Foundation, The Wild Center, and
the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Adirondack Program. (January 20,

'Going green' is going strong in classes HILTON
— Every day, hundreds of thousands of perfectly good items that
could be reused head off to America's landfills. And although they
know their efforts will make only a small dent in those numbers,
students at the Hilton Central School District's Northwood
Elementary School have pledged to do something about it. On Tuesday,
fifth-graders at the North Greece Road school held the grand opening
of their New to You Reuse Center, where they collect gently used
items from around the school and put them out for teachers to reuse.

RIT puts a twist on sustainability |
democratandchronicle.com | Democrat and Chronicle RIT gives its
own twist to a green global buzzword: sustainability. Most people
define sustainability in personal terms — rain gardens, electric
cars, solar panels on the roof of a house. But on RIT's Henrietta
campus, sustainability is defined much more broadly. Under the
Golisano institute's umbrella resides research into nanotechnology,
electronics assembly and cleaning products. Professors consult with
metal finishers, automakers and chemical companies. (January 16,

Solar energy Ph.D. coming to University of Rochester

Thousands of times more solar energy hits the Earth every day

energy is not on all the time. How do we deal with that? Solar

10/14/2009: Sustainable Design Awards Granted to Four
New York College Teams | New York, N.Y.) Is
sustainable year-round food production possible in cold
climates? Could a new kind of cooking stove in Haiti help
decrease the amount of fuel needed, carbon dioxide emissions and
deforestation? These are some of the questions four New York
college teams are investigating this school year thanks to EPA’s
People, Prosperity and the Planet (P3) Phase I Awards. P3 is a
national competition that encourages undergraduate and graduate
students to create sustainable solutions to environmental
problems through technological innovation. These sustainable
solutions must be environmentally friendly, use natural
resources efficiently and be economically competitive. | A
Cornell University team was granted funding to research
strategies for simplifying water treatment plant operations and
a team at the Rochester Institute of Technology is
designing an improved cook stove to be used in Haiti that would
reduce carbon dioxide emissions and time spent gathering fuel.
