Living Green Newslinks - Rochester, NY area
RochesterEnvironment.com
These NewsLinks represent a decade of ferreting out local online
NewsLinks to the issue of Living Green in our area.
Many individuals, governments, and business are changing to adapt to the
new attitude towards our planet that we must live sustainably.
These pages, in chronological order, that progress to a
community on its way to sustainability.
The more recent stories are on the top and oldest at the bottom of
this list. Looking for something specific. Use
Control + F and search for it on this page.
And, although many of these links no longer work, I believe that it
is important to be able to find that these stories have existed for
ferreting out existing or impending environmental problems. The
repercussions of pollution or overuse of a resource often takes a long
time for us to recognize and when we finally do, it is invaluable to be
able to track the history of various issues before they found a tipping
point and became a crisis. Students, scientists, historians, and
citizens alike should benefit from being able to follow the thread of an
issue back through time.

The upside of greening Greece - Greece, NY - Greece
Post Greece, N.Y. — If it’s a Monday, a crew of suburban foresters
might be at a home on Apollo Drive. No, make that Haviland Park.
Actually, on any given day they might be trimming branches that brush
power lines, removing dead or diseased trees, planting new ones, or
cleaning up from a storm — Greece gets ’em, you know — most anywhere in
town. (June 21, 2010)

www.WHEC.com - Homeowners worried about City's future Green
Project The city wants to tear down vacant and old homes
to make green space parks in tough parts of the city. But what if you
own a home in the targeted area? That's what some property owners are
calling us about now. The plan, according to the City of Rochester
website, talks about tearing down vacant homes, city owned vacant
property and "relocates households within identified areas for the
program." Property owners who rent their properties to tenants interpret
that to mean the city will take their homes by either fair-market sales
or eminent domain. (June 8, 2010)

Ashes to ashes: Burials turning earth friendly |
democratandchronicle.com | Democrat and Chronicle Green burial is
hardly new. "The Jewish people have been doing it for over 5,000 years,"
said Jarrod Krieger, owner of Brighton Memorial Chapel, an exclusively
Jewish funeral home. Krieger says that the Jewish religion forbids
embalming and Jewish coffins should be made completely of wood, with
holes at the bottom to help the body be reabsorbed into nature. Britton
Road Association, which operates two all-Jewish cemeteries in the
Rochester area, typically receives an untreated body in a pine box.

Going Green: Fort Drum goes green - YNN, Your News Now
The Army's Fort Drum near Watertown is becoming greener by incorporating
green features into major construction projects. A new barracks is under
construction and 30 geothermal wells are being drilled to a depth where
the air temperature is constant. Water is run through the piping to that
depth where the air at that level warms or cools the water to that
temperature and then it's pumped back into the barracks to help warm the
