Although many of these links no longer work, I believe that it is
important to be able to find that these stories have existed for
ferreting out existing or impending environmental problems. The
repercussions of pollution or overuse of a resource often takes a long
time for us to recognize and when we finally do, it is invaluable to be
able to track the history of various issues before they get to a tipping
point and became a crisis.
Also, much that mankind has done to change our environment was
accomplished without any knowledge of what the environment was like
before changing it, but maybe we will be able to heal our environmental
if we archive the news stories so we will be able to unravel the events
that led up to the disaster. Students, scientists, historians, and
citizens alike should benefit from being able to follow the thread of an
issue back through time.

Federal Government Opens More Ocean to Wind Projects - NYTimes.com
Enthusiasm for offshore wind projects may have cooled among
developers in the United States these days, but the Obama
administration is still trying to make a ribbon of
wind farms off the Atlantic Coast a reality. On Thursday,
Ken Salazar, the secretary of the interior, and Tommy P.
Beaudreau, the director of the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management,
said the government had
completed an environmental review and found that selling leases
for wind energy would not create environmental problems in the
designated “wind energy areas” off the coasts of Maryland, Virginia,
New Jersey and Delaware. (February 2, 2012)

Research project to track bird migration hot spots on Superior shore
An Algoma University professor plans to plant microphones along
the shore of Lake Superior next fall to help find migratory hot
spots that could be affected by wind energy development. “It’s
important to try not to put developments in areas which are
intensively used (by migrating birds), or maybe used by endangered
species, and we really don’t have a good handle on that
information,” said Jennifer Foote, an assistant professor in Algoma
U.’s biology department who is behind the research. (January

NY Town's Battle Over Wind Power Makes it to the Big Screen
MEREDITH, N.Y. - President Obama got bipartisan applause during his
State of the Union address when he called for an all-out
clean-energy initiative. But a new film serves as a cautionary tale.
Like many of her neighbors in Meredith, a small town near Oneonta,
filmmaker Laura Israel was thrilled to learn developers wanted to
build 40 industrial wind turbines in and around the town. The more
she and the townspeople learned about the possible harmful impact on
health and safety as well as some questionable economics involved,
however, the more the town became divided, neighbor against
neighbor. (January 30, 2012)

Gas drilling could take air out of offshore wind | WBEZ
Cleveland has the best shot at building a Great Lakes wind farm. But
the financing remains uncertain as Ohio focuses on energy that could
generate more jobs. Mason says Cleveland could help build offshore
wind farms throughout the Great Lakes. He points to the city’s
proximity to a deep-water port, rail lines and manufacturers. He
says those companies could retool to make parts and supplies ranging
from transmission cables to ice-resistant blade coating. The
wind-farm supporters commissioned a study that says their project
could lead to 15,000 new Ohio jobs within two decades. The supply
chain could include Lincoln Electric, which makes welding equipment
in Euclid, a suburb northeast of Cleveland. Lincoln Electric is
already getting a taste of wind-energy generation thanks to a
443-foot-tall turbine that helps power the company’s main plant.

State, federal agencies ready to regulate offshore wind development
- Local News - GoErie.com/Erie Times-News Wind turbines
scheduled to be built in Lake Erie off Cleveland in 2012 may be the
first in the water in the Great Lakes, and aren't likely to be the
last. Wind energy companies are proposing to build thousands of
offshore turbines to harvest alternative energy from the wind-swept
lakes. And Lake Erie, because of its shallow depths, is considered
prime underwater real estate, developers said Monday in Erie.
Neither Pennsylvania nor the federal government so far requires a
specific permit to build a wind farm offshore in Lake Erie, or on
land. But existing regulations will protect water quality, wildlife,
coastlines, navigation, shipwrecks, and maybe even sunset views from
Presque Isle, said Geoff Bristow, chief of energy and technology
development for the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental
Protection's northwestern region. (March 17, 2011)

NYSERDA funding for on-site wind turbines
ALBANY - The New York State Energy Research and Development

New Yorkers install small-scale wind turbines that will cut
their energy costs and reduce their carbon footprint The
program is available to individual consumers, developers,
farmers and others who wish to install “on-site” wind turbines
to generate electricity. It will provide funding to support
approximately 30 percent of the purchase- and installation cost
of wind turbines. While the electricity generated from these
systems will primarily be used by the individual customer,
unused electricity could be sold to electric utilities to be
added to the grid. “Wind power can be an important tool for
many consumers to incorporate sustainable energy power into
their operations in a way that reduces their reliance on fossil
fuels,” said NYSERDA President and CEO Francis J. Murray.

closed - Canandaigua, NY - MPNnow Altona, N.Y. —
Regulators say a wind energy company is operating safely in New
York and they have closed their investigation of a turbine tower
collapse in northern New York. The state Public Service
Commission probe began after two of the 65 turbines at the Noble
Environmental Power facility in Altona (al-TOH’-nuh) were
damaged when power was lost during electrical work in March
2009. A blade on one was damaged. The other fell when its blades
spun out of control at three times the rated speed. (October 14,

Great Lakes-St. Lawrence ports advance wind energy
A comprehensive discussion of the important role the Great
Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway ports system can play in providing
transportation and logistics services to the wind energy
industry is now available in a new document released by the
Great Lakes Commission, via the Great Lakes Wind Collaborative
(GLWC). The GLWC surveyed ports in the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence
region to assess their readiness and willingness to handle wind
turbine cargo. Their responses indicate that the ports not only
have the infrastructure but also have ample experience and
interest to handle the unique needs of the wind energy industry.
The Great Lakes-St. Lawrence ports are well-situated to
facilitate and advance the growth of the wind energy industry.

Study: Offshore wind could generate all U.S. electricity
- Green House - USATODAY.com U.S. offshore winds,
abundant off the coasts of 26 states, have the potential to
generate four times as much power as the nation's present
electric capacity, a new Department of Energy report says.
Developing this resource would help the United States reduce air
pollution, achieve 20% of its electricity (or about 54 gigawatts)
from wind by 2030 and create more than 43,000 permanent,
well-paid technical jobs, according to the
240-page
study by DOE's National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

The cost of wind: power when we don’t need it -
thestar.com On a blustery Labour Day weekend this year, the
wind turbines sprinkled across Ontario’s landscape set a record.
That Saturday, they pumped an average of 1,000 megawatts of
power into the province’s grid over a seven-hour stretch, the
biggest sustained wind output on record. It amounted to about 7
per cent of the power demand at the time. (September 25, 2010)

EERE News: DOE Releases Annual Wind Market Report, Finds
U.S. Wind Projects using a Growing Percentage of Domestically
Manufactured Equipment The U.S. Department of
Energy (DOE) today released its "2009 Wind Technologies Market
Report." This report, authored primarily by DOE's Lawrence
Berkeley National Laboratory, provides a comprehensive overview
of trends in the rapidly-evolving U.S. wind power market. For
the first time, this year's Wind Technologies Market Report
estimates the amount of wind turbine and component imports from
other countries. The study finds that a growing percentage of
wind turbine equipment is being sourced domestically, as both
domestic and foreign companies seek to minimize transportation
costs and currency risks by establishing local manufacturing
capabilities. When presented as a fraction of total wind turbine
equipment-related costs, the overall U.S. content is found to
have increased from about 50% in 2008 to roughly 60% in 2009.

Sign-up is urged for offshore wind farm : Technology

before the New York Power Authority's proposal for a major offshore wind
farm takes shape, but supporters say it's not too early for local

initiative to help local suppliers link up with the developers now
working on proposals for wind farms off the shores of Lakes Erie and

Wind farms interfering with weather radar in NY | AP |
10/13/2009 SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Wind farms in upstate New York are
interfering with National Weather Service Doppler radars, making it more
difficult to detect and assess approaching lake effect snow storms. The
spinning blades on the towering turbines can cause problems by
reflecting some of the radar's signal, which can be falsely interpreted
as wind or precipitation. The reflections can make storms coming off
lakes Erie and Ontario look stronger than they actually are, but the
structures can also act like a wall and hide a storm from forecasters.

Company wants to measure Hamlin's wind speed and

used to gather wind speed and direction statistics. The towers would be
six inches in circumference and 197 feet tall. Town of Hamlin Supervisor

giant footprints generate wariness - Wind
turbines are a mixed bag environmentally. The global benefits are clear
but hilltops must be cleared of trees and brush for safety's sake and

that modern turbines are far less harmful to birds than the old-style

attracted birds. Today, smooth towers, slower-moving blades and red
