These daily updates pertain to what is going on in our environment in
Rochester & around the world. Although I do not see RochesterEnvironment.com,
or Global Environmental Resources, as environmental activist sites, I do
view them as active. They are active conduits for all the environmental
news, services, links, and an on-going discovery for the potential role
that I believe the Internet will play in environmentalism. Your local news
media is not doing its job in informing the public on the breath and depth
of our environmental problems, so you are going to have to get on the Internet.
- 11/25/09 - Good Environmental
Coverage: I applaud this story below by the Democrat
and Chronicle yesterday for it thoroughness and importance. Not
that all good local environmental reporting has to be about a
negative situation (Brownfields), but every community should
have a thorough understanding of its environment in order for
its citizens to act and vote to keep their local environmental
sustainable. Not knowing about old dumpsites, the state of our
water and our air is not how a community develops and goes
forward. We have to know the historical, present, and future
plans of what is going on in our environment and we must be able
to depend on our local media to do that. This article, if it
represents an attitude towards our environment coverage to be
presented to the public everyday, would demand that the public
support it in this time of media crisis. Our media shouldn’t
have to pander to the public’s wishes in order to survive; it
should provide the public information we need to know to
survive. And, the public should be willing to support thorough
ongoing environmental reporting in its community, or suffer the
consequences of acting on insufficient, delusional or misguided
information.

state and local agencies raised questions and alarms about
possible threats to residents of Timrod Drive but never acted,
an investigation by the Democrat and Chronicle found. On at
least two occasions, officials recommended testing to see
whether Timrod Drive residents faced any health risks, but the
testing was never done. (November 29, 09)

- 11/25/09 - Could this happen in the
Rochester, NY area? Mandatory recycling? Perhaps our
inability to recycle adequately now will require that we
mandatory recycling like some communities are doing:
Mandatory recycling comes to Hampton |
SeacoastOnline.com HAMPTON — In case you haven't heard,
there is no longer an option when it comes to recycling in the
town of Hampton. Selectmen voted in August to phase in a
mandatory recycling over a three-month period. It started first
with glass bottles in October, then aluminium/tin food and
beverage cans were added in November. Now, starting on Dec. 1,
all cardboard and paper will be required to be recycled.

- 11/21/09 - "Can't Afford to Waste One
Minute" Getting How Important and Immediate the Climate Change
issue is: This statement below by Orville Schell
in the interview
After Obama Visit, Assessing U.S.-China Relations from
Fresh Air from WHYY : NPR struck me how real and in our face
the Climate Change issue is to people who have an intricate
knowledge of world affairs. Read the whole transcript, but this
statement stood out from the rest. "This doesn't mean that I
like people being put in jail or losing their rights and I still
think this is extremely important. But if you look at where we
really can not afford to waste a minute, I think you'd have to
say that climate change begs all of us to make as herculean an
effort as we possibly can before it's too late. And China is the
heart of the matter and the United States is a close second. "
- 11/20/09 - Prying Green Eyes:
One of the scenarios that I've envisioned for a long time is
that the Internet is going to be a major monitoring tool for our
environment. It’s obvious: more and more people care about the
depreciating state of our global environment with climate
change, pollution, loss of biodiversity, etc.—at the same time
our senses have been broaden by the Internet. Anyone with a
computer connection, a camera, and a computer can communicate
with the rest of the world the environmental degradation they
are experiencing—regardless of it’s on the mainstream media’s or
their government’s agenda. In the future it’s going to be harder
and harder to keep non-environmental (sustainable) practices
hidden. Check out this story:
Google spyware will help vigilantes save rainforests
Environmentalists across the world are to be enlisted as
armchair detectives to monitor satellite images of rainforests
and report any illegal logging. The images will be frequently
updated and anyone with internet access will be able to make
instant comparisons with historical images and spot destruction
of rainforest almost as soon as it happens.

So you want a green career? -- latimes.com
The giant push for eco-friendly practices has created job
opportunities for those with little or no experience. Although
the recession has emptied shopping malls and filled jobless
centers, the call has only gotten louder for renewable energy,
environmentally gentle products and eco-friendly practices --
and for people to make all of that happen. President Obama has
said that he hopes to create 5 million green jobs within a
decade. The U.S. Conference of Mayors estimates that the "green
economy" could account for as much as 10% of job growth over the
next 30 years. (November 15, 09)

City of Rochester | RFP - Rochester Bicycle Master Plan
The Rochester Bicycle Master Plan will examine best practices in
bicycle infrastructure and services, assess their feasibility
for application locally, identify appropriate locations for
bicycle facilities, and recommend bicycle-supportive policies.
The Plan will complement the TIP project by providing conceptual
design and inventory work with respect to on-street bicycle
lanes. However, this Plan is not limited to bicycle lanes;
additional bicycling infrastructure and services to be
considered include shared lane markings (sharrows), bicycle
boulevards, bicycle parking, commuter facilities (e.g., showers,
lockers, etc.), bicycle sharing, and more. The City of Rochester
and Monroe County recently received an “honorable mention” from
the League of American Bicyclists’ Bicycle Friendly Communities
Program; the City has a goal of achieving full Bicycle Friendly
Community status. This Master Plan will provide the City with a
framework for meeting this goal. --from

Railroad bridge could become trail walkway |

feet above the Genesee River gorge, the abandoned railroad
bridge offers spectacular views and some uncertain footing. The
700-foot span, just north of Smith Street, came to the city as
part of a $1 million-plus land deal in 2005. The land, nearly 20
acres of abandoned rail line, stretches from Charlotte to High

recreational trail next year. The 130-year-old bridge was
something of an extra — and also an unknown. (November 14, 09)

Transportation history? Maybe some of

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal Online - CANAL DISCOVERY:
Rochester’s subway through the years "The City of
Rochester was faced with an interesting dilemma after New York
state opened the Erie Barge Canal in 1918. During this
enlargement in Rochester, the Erie Canal was actually moved from
its location of more than 90 years in the center of the business
district, to a location further south outside of the city
center. The original canal route in Rochester featured one of
the most amazing architectural structures found on the entire
363-mile path of the Erie Canal, the Rochester Aqueduct. This
series of stone arches and overhead trough actually carried
boats over the rapids of the Genesee River as it traversed the
city. Engineering being in its infancy in the early 1820s, the
original Erie Canal “engineers” did not have a viable plan to
cross the river at grade so raising the canal over the river
presented the best alternative." -
