GOV SITE - GOVERNOR DAVID A. PATERSON ANNOUNCES SUSPENSION
OF FLU SHOT MANDATE FOR HEALTH CARE EMPLOYEES DUE TO SHORTAGE OF
VACCINE Urges Vaccination for Pregnant Women, Children
First Governor David A. Paterson today announced that State Health
Commissioner Richard F. Daines, M.D., has suspended the mandatory
influenza immunization requirement for New York health care workers
so that the limited vaccine supplies can be used for populations
most at risk of serious illness and death – especially pregnant
women and children and young people between the ages of 6 months and
24 years. “Over the last week, the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC) acknowledged that New York would only receive
approximately 23 percent of its anticipated vaccine supply by the
end of the month,” Governor Paterson said. “As a result, we need to
be as resourceful as we can with the limited supplies of vaccine
currently coming into the State and make sure that those who are at
the highest risk for complications from the H1N1 flu receive the
first vaccine being distributed right now in New York State.”

RIT scientist shines laser light on methane in pursuit of
clean fuel Novel technique could someday convert
methane to liquid fuel An abundant greenhouse gas could someday help
clean up the earth. Converting methane to liquid methanol could
produce clean, low-cost fuel and prevent the potent greenhouse gas
from entering the atmosphere. Exploiting methane in this way could
also produce a hydrogen source for fuel cells and yield other
industrial applications. The key to taming methane, and synthesizing
it in the laboratory, rests in identifying the starter link in
methane's armor chain of hydrocarbons. (October 22, 09)

ENVIRONMENT-US: Greatest of Lakes Hit by Climate Change -
IPS ipsnews.net The five Great Lakes extend across 244,000
square kilometres that straddle the U.S. and Canada, just 2,400

Atlantic Ocean, and some of the richest commercial fisheries in the
world. About 40 million people take their drinking water from the
Great Lakes. At the same time, the lakes are massively polluted with
chemicals and heavy metals, particularly the bottom sediment, after
hundreds of years of industrialisation. The lakes are closed

10/20/2009: New EPA Information on Insect Repellents
New EPA Information on Insect Repellents WASHINGTON – The U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has launched a new Web page
containing product information on certain skin-applied insect
repellents. EPA’s goal is to provide the public with information on
registered insect repellents and their effectiveness claims in a
clear, consistent, and user-friendly format. “EPA’s release of
information on the effectiveness of insect repellents will help
American consumers select the right product for their needs and
protect themselves and their children from potentially devastating
diseases spread by mosquitoes and ticks, such as West Nile virus and
Lyme disease,” said Steve Owens, assistant administrator for EPA’s
Office of Prevention, Pesticides and Toxic Substances. “This
Web-based dissemination of information supports Administrator
Jackson’s goals of transparency and public access and protecting
children’s health.”

South Bend Tribune: Safety of eating Great Lakes fish
discussed The Great Lakes teem with fish, but anglers
looking to them for their next meal should be cautious. The fish
contain an array of contaminants, including some known to threaten

suppress the immune system and thyroid development and may cause
cancer. The contaminants have lead to consumption advisories on many
popular fish species, such as walleye, lake trout and salmon.

Organizing the Biggest Day of Action the World Has Ever Seen
| CommonDreams.org Organizing the Biggest Day of Action the
World Has Ever Seen by Bill McKibben Even two years
ago, I was in complete despair about our chances of fighting climate
change. But something's changed. It's not the science, which has
gotten steadily worse. It's the first signs that the planet's immune
system--conscious citizens ready to make a difference--is finally
kicking in. Bloggers, in this metaphor, are key antibodies--they
recognize threats, and rally people to take the steps needed. So
this year's Blogger Action Day is, in a sense, a test: is the planet
now wired together in a way that will let it act swiftly, nimbly,
decisively against the great trouble we've ever faced? (October 13,

Wind farms interfering with weather radar in NY |
AP | 10/13/2009 SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Wind farms in upstate New York
are interfering with National Weather Service Doppler radars, making
it more difficult to detect and assess approaching lake effect snow
storms. The spinning blades on the towering turbines can cause
problems by reflecting some of the radar's signal, which can be
falsely interpreted as wind or precipitation. The reflections can
make storms coming off lakes Erie and Ontario look stronger than
they actually are, but the structures can also act like a wall and
hide a storm from forecasters. (October 13, 09)
