Finds Bulk of Western Adirondack Streams Suffer from Acid Rain - NYS
Dept. of Environmental Conservation First-Ever Assessment Puts
Stream Research on Par with Lakes; Shows Danger Signs for Soils,
Macroinvertebrates A new scientific study of streams in the western
region of the Adirondack Mountains has found that two-thirds of them are
harmed by acid rain produced by the burning of fossil fuels, New York
state and federal officials announced today. This equates to 450 miles
of acidified streams. This study, published in the October-November
issue of the Journal of Environmental Quality, is the first-ever
regional assessment of streams to include episodic acidification --
short-term pulses of acidity that occur during high stream flows. It was
conducted jointly by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the New York
State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), the Adirondack
Lakes Survey Corporation, and the University of Texas at Arlington.
Primary funding was provided by the New York State Energy Research and
Development Authority (NYSERDA). Supporting data was provided by
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute through its Adirondack Effects
Assessment Program. Copies of the final report of this study are

A
Gathering Storm - New York Wastewater Infrastructure in Crisis - NYS
Dept. of Environmental Conservation Sewage and wastewater treatment
facilities in New York State are deteriorating. Almost all of New York's
residents rely on these facilities to treat sewage and wastewater from
our homes and businesses before they return it to our waterbodies.
However, one-quarter of the 610 facilities in New York are operating
beyond their useful life expectancy and many others are using outmoded,
inadequate technology, increasing their likelihood of tainting our
waters. Moreover, NYSDEC's report on 30-year water quality trends found
evidence that New York is retreating from the significant gains achieved
when the current system was originally constructed and there is still
more to do. Every year, old sewers flooded by stormwater release more
than 27 billion gallons of untreated sewage into the New York Harbor
alone. - New York State
