Governor urges feds to declare 23 counties agricultural
disaster areas - ALBANY - Governor David
Paterson Friday urged the federal government to declare 23 New York
counties agricultural disaster areas. In a letter to Secretary of
Agriculture Ed Schafer, Governor Paterson requested disaster assistance
from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for farms that experienced crop
damage from severe hail storms on June 16th. Twenty-three counties
across New York State were hit with large sized hail, high winds and
excessive rain. Counties included in the Governor’s disaster assistance
request are: Albany, Cattaraugus, Cayuga, Columbia, Dutchess, Erie,
Fulton, Genesee, Greene, Monroe ( June 28, 08)

NY's Seaway Trail preened as world-class birding region - San Jose
Mercury News The Seaway Trail has the potential to rival renowned
birding destinations such as Cape May, N.J., Chesapeake Bay's Delmarva
Peninsula, and the World Birding Center in the lower Rio Grande Valley

Cayuga Lake monitoring plan presented

Hemlock Lake For Sale? -
There's a new addition to Hemlock Lake which opens Saturday. The Nature
Conservancy will unveil a hiking trail on the lake. The trail is one and
half miles with a three-quarter spur trail. It's called "Rob's Trail" in
honor of a former trustee of the conservancy who recently passed away.

- Folks around Milwaukee are concerned about the disease viral
hemorrhagic septicemia being found in yellow perch in Lake Michigan.
Well, Wisconsin folks, welcome to the club. VHS, obviously, is making
its way around the Great Lakes. Those of us who frequent Lake Erie saw
VHS in action in 2006 when it killed a large number of freshwater drum —

must eliminate "significant threats" to health but are not required to
leave them spotless, a state judge has ruled. In December 2006, state
officials tried to interpret New York's 1979 Superfund law so that
cleanup of sites would leave the locations in the condition they were in

Bat ALBANY, N.Y. (June 17, 2008) – On Thursday, June 19, at 11:30
a.m. at the state rabies laboratory in Guilderland, State Health
Commissioner Richard F. Daines, M.D., and rabies experts will
demonstrate how to safely catch a bat found in a home. The demonstration
will highlight the importance of capturing a bat that may have come in
contact with people or pets. A captured bat can be tested for rabies at
the laboratory and people can avoid unnecessary rabies treatment if the
bat tests negative for rabies. Many New Yorkers are unsure what to do if
they discover a bat in their home. As a result, each year more than
1,400 New Yorkers undergo rabies treatment because the bat they were

Health department: Parma dog has rabies - Rochester, NY - MPNnow
Monroe County health officials were informed yesterday that a dog from
Parma that fought with a rabid raccoon in late April has tested positive
for rabies. A total of two dogs were quarantined after coming in contact
with the rabid raccoon, and were being monitored by health officials.
Last Tuesday, one of the dogs began to show neurological symptoms of
rabies, and was euthanized by a veterinarian and tested for rabies by
