Henrietta adds a new park -
Features of the 71-acre park include trails, a picnic shelter
HENRIETTA Residents will soon have 71 acres to enjoy along the
Genesee River at a new town park. The park, tentatively called
Riverfront Park, is just south of Scottsville-West Henrietta Road,
near the Riverton Golf Course. It will feature trails, a picnic
shelter and at least one playground, but no ball fields. "Maybe
there will be some little ponds along the way, possibly a boat
launch along the river," said town Supervisor Jim Breese. For close
to three years, officials have been planning to acquire the land,
but the deal was sealed just last month. (January 8, 2007)

City parks easily absorb cut; no big disruptions
In the 2005-06
fiscal year, the Rochester Parks and Recreation
Department budget was cut by $122,800, or slightly
less than 1 percent. The reduction has not
compromised the city's ability to maintain its
parks, said Loretta Scott, Rochester's parks
commissioner. Cuts were limited to swim programs
with the fewest participants.

Monroe's
parks face undergrowth of worry
- Amid joys of a gemlike system lie
concerns over development, vandalism, nature
itself - But the rave reviews
are sometimes shaded with worry. Public parks also
face challenges, including declining staffs and
shrinking budgets although officials contend
that the parks have not suffered greatly from the
cuts. Other problems: vandalism, breakneck ATV
riders, parking woes and pressure from developers.

Zoo
deal preserves park, aids elephants
- Proposal makes room for baby pachyderm, puts
parking off site.
And a little elephant shall lead them to
compromise. Monroe
County officials announced Wednesday a plan that
apparently ends a long-running rancorous debate
over expansion of the Seneca Park Zoo. The zoo
will expand northward, building a $4 million
elephant exhibit on 8 acres. Most importantly,
though, the plan calls for an expansion of zoo
parking off-site instead of in the middle of the
scenic park designed 111 years ago by the
legendary Frederick Law Olmsted. (December 23,

Democrat & Chronicle: Webster spared sale of parkland
(November 16, 2002) WEBSTER Tuesdays passage of the Monroe
County budget for 2003 may have benefited the town of Webster. The
county was planning to sell about six acres of Webster Park, along
Lake Ontario, to raise $600,000 and help close the countys budget
gap. Officials identified the parkland to be sold as a 4.3-acre plot
on the west side of the park, where the Kanatota Lodge is located, and
a 1.9-acre plot on the east side of the 550-acre park.

Webster Park could shrink under county plan Two parcels of land that do not fit into
the master plan for Webster Park, according to county officials, may
be sold as residential property to help balance next year's county
budget. "I would call these 'sore thumb' parcels because they stick
out like a sore thumb from the rest of Webster Park," said Jim Smith,
spokesman for County Executive Jack Doyle. "If something doesn't fit
in well with a particular park, it makes sense to return it to the tax
rolls so it can provide revenue to the local school district, town and
county." (November 01, 02)
