Weather &Climate Change Page for Rochester New York

Deeply disturbing are the many changes Climate Change may have for the world environment and even the Rochester, New York area. Check out this page often for a continual update of the changes we are already experiencing from Global Warming and those that could come.  At the level of when human can prevent the world from climate change, anticipating (not simply being 'chicken little') must be a reason assessment of what could possibly happen due to our behavior.  Waiting, as the critics of the case for Global Warming would have us do, will be to late--the planetary climate system is too big and complex to stop on a dime.

**ESSAYS** - Climate change will hit home—it’s only a matter of how hard. (July 29, 2007) The latest in climate forecasts for our region, NEW YORK is the report "Northeast Climate Impacts Assessment" by Union of Concerned Scientists. "Well, like it or not, it’s becoming ever more evident that in New York State we can expect these possible scenarios: temperatures rising, a migration of plants and animals north as our climate adopts a Southern visage (though, most ((especially plants)) won’t move quickly enough), droughts, change in precipitation, lowering of Great Lakes water levels, coastal flooding, sea-level rise, shore-line change, extreme heat in our cities, more diseases (like Lyme disease, West Nile Virus, and maybe malaria) and more potent cases of poison ivy, air quality loss, agriculture changes, changes in the fisheries, changes in the dairy industry, changes in spruce/fir forest of the Adirondacks, alterations in winter recreation (did you know the NYS has “more ski areas than any other state in the nation”?), and an increase in ozone pollution."

Also, check out Climate Choices in the Northeast: Northeast Climate Impacts Assessment Time for climate action in the U.S. Northeast is now A new report by independent scientists shows that if heat-trapping emissions are not significantly curtailed, global warming will substantially change the Northeast's character and economy due to such impacts as rising sea levels, dangerously hot days, and lower crop productivity. But there is good news in the report too: individuals, businesses, and governments have a rich array of strategies at their disposal today to reduce emissions and avoid the most severe consequences of climate change. -- from Climate Choices

Was “An Inconvenient Truth” a success? Most of you have probably seen “An Inconvenient Truth” Al. Gore’s documentary film that launched a worldwide public focus on the problem of Global Warming. But, do you know how thoroughly researched and effective this documentary has been? Over the years, I have witnessed the long sloping curve upward in public awareness of Global Warming and then the dramatic, hockey-stick spike on the issues since the film’s debut. This is only a personal observation. How about something more substantial: some facts about the film, and what specific programs, films, actions, and research that “An Inconvenient Truth” has generated?  Check out: "Convenient Resources for "An Inconvenient Truth" Frederick Stoss -University at Buffalo, State University of New York "Editor's Note: Before Al Gore's film An Inconvenient Truth won an Oscar for best documentary film, a member of the Electronic Green Journal's Editorial Board, Fred Stoss, traveled to Nashville, Tennessee. Fred was taught by former Vice President Al Gore and a group of scientists, educators, and communication specialists from The Climate Project to become "climate change messengers" and help spread the word about global warming across the United States. He was selected from thousands of applicants to participate in training sessions sponsored by The Climate Project. Attendees received presentation skills training and educational resources for sharing with others. They also received an intensive overview of the science of global warming. This training provides Stoss with the resources to conduct special versions of Gore's famous global warming slide show that is the basis for An Inconvenient Truth. As a librarian, he is frequently asked for resources to support the data and information described in the slide show." --from Electronic Green Journal

From the New York State Department of Conservation (DEC) find out about the quality of our air this summer before you go out an exercise: Ozone, a major component of smog and a potentially harmful pollutant, is created by sunlight reacting with chemicals found in gasoline vapors and emissions from cars and industrial smoke stacks.
