Cross Canal Brook Watershed Alliance

Description

Cross Canal Brook is an unprotected class C tributary of Irondequoit Creek draining a watershed of about 1500 acres entirely within the town of Perinton, New York that forms an important wildlife corridor between the Erie Canal and Irondequoit Creek.

State and county policies have forced flows into the brook that would otherwise have been directed into larger tributaries. Overdevelopment and poor implementation and maintenance of storm water control measures have caused severe erosion and flooding of our properties, with trees toppled over, eroded bluffs, broken culvert pipes, a heaved sewer line, stone riprap washed away, landscape bridges washed away, a foundation threatened, widening of the stream and increased sediment pollution into Irondequoit Creek just 1.6 miles from public fishing access.  Engineering reports commissioned by the Town that have warned of fragile soils, too fast flows, and the need for continued streambank protection have been ignored.

We homeowners have formed a group, the Cross Canal Brook Watershed Alliance, to research and document the damage that is occurring.
