Congratulations to the Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management (PRISM) on their hard work detailed in their annual report from 2025!
What is PRISM?
Finger Lakes PRISM is an organization established by the Finger Lakes Institute in 2013, and is part of a regional network including 7 other PRISM organizations. Funded by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, FL-Prism aims to combat invasive species in the fingerlakes region through community outreach and joint action.
What is an invasive species?
Invasive species are organisms that originated somewhere else and have made their way to a new area, often through human action. This change in scenery kills off most plants and animals, but for some, the new environment is a space to thrive. Unfortunately, the introduction of these invasive species increases competition against native species. In many cases, invasive plants and animals survive at higher rates by stealing vital space and nutrients from native ones. It is important to control the spread of invasive species in order to protect native species, prevent long-term environmental damage, and keep our communities and property safe from harm.
2025 Report
The 2025 FL-PRISM report details their successes in reaching their goals of prevention, restoration, early detection + rapid response, establishing partnerships, and securing funding. They achieved these goals through various methods such as land and aquatic surveys, community outreach, and by using resources like IMapInvasives. In the future, they hope to continue making progress in eliminating invasive species in the Finger Lakes region.
